Trump Town Hall was a Disaster
Fact-checking Donald is Like Spraying a Single Hose on a Raging Forest Fire
I watched the CNN town hall tonight so you didn’t have to. It was a nightmare.
In case you are living under a rock, this live event featuring Donald Trump aired just one day after a federal jury unanimously found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation. The jury awarded his accuser, E. Jean Carroll $5 million.
Oh, and right. Also, in case you have amnesia like CNN, there’s that part about Trump trying to overthrow our democratic system of government in 2021 by enlisting his “stand back and stand by” insurrectionists to storm the U.S. Capitol to try to impede the counting of the electoral votes. There’s more, but you know that.
Yet still, CNN decided the show must go on, apparently.
The whole event was a disgrace, despite Kaitlan Collins’ efforts to fact check him in real time. Fact-checking Trump in front of a fawning audience was like spraying a single hose of water on acres of forest fire.
It was worse than I thought it would be. The more he lied and ignored her corrections, the more the audience cheered. Facts did not matter to them. Domination and arrogance and mockery did.
“It was not a rigged election. It was not a stolen election,” Collins replied when he began to lie. No matter, he steamrolled over her. Republican officials debunked what you said “about fraudulent ballots,” she insisted. So what, he just threw out more lies. Donald got applause when he said “let’s just win it again and straighten out our country.”
Kaitlan Collins turned to January 6th asking why he waited three hours to tell the crowd to go home for three hours. He denied that and kind of danced around it when confronted with the truth. He said the police officer who shot Ashley Babbitt was a “thug” and that this officer was bragging on television about killing her. Collins said he wasn’t doing that.
When Collins asked, Trump said he does not owe Pence an apology “because he did something wrong. He should’ve put the votes back to the state legislatures and I think we would’ve had a different outcome” Major applause.
